From the once great abbey that watches the Wye

To the priory at Brecknock your arrow doth lye.

The path runs true and once crossed a keep

But the way from here is not for the meek.

Fly from here, straight and sound

Pass Scudamore’s House and onward bound

For the amount of derly men were crowned

‘It seems to indicate that the line from Tintern to Brecon is the line that passes through the castle but the castle is way off line, I know the maps they had were not very accurate but not that bad.’

‘In that case just follow the line and see if it passes through any other castles,’ Molly replied.

It didn’t take long to find that the route past over Raglan, a town with a very famous castle but the line was about half a mile off the actual castle Molly pointed out that when they say it passes over the castle they may not mean literally. The line also passed over Abergavenny and Crickhowell, not wanting to overlook anything else Molly done a quick search on the internet and found references to castles in both towns.

‘Okay so what castle is our one,’ asked Molly.

‘I take it back about this being too easy!’ They examined the map in close detail to find the sites of the other two castles.

The Internet search showed the castle at Crickhowell had completely gone apart from one wall. Molly was reading about the individual castles. ‘Crickhowell castle had gone almost completely, long before the clue was written and although it’s closer to our line than Raglan it’s still not in direct line, and I don’t think they would use a reference to a castle that had disappeared long before they were born.’

They continued to look for Abergavenny castle. ‘Bingo,’ exclaimed Molly.

‘There right under the line, Abergavenny Castle.’ Kris drew a line this time from Abergavenny Castle to Holme Lacy House but it did not tell them anything different, it was still just a line ending at Holme Lacy House.

‘Unless we have some idea of how long to draw it we have no idea of where it’s going. It can’t end at the house because, as before, it makes the other clues pointless and the clue said pass the house’ Kris said as he was drawing the line.

‘That’s on the next line Kris. Look here.’

The door bell rang and Molly heard her Father walking down the hall to open it as she started to read the next line of the clue, which was not so clear ‘For the amount of derly men were crowned,’ Molly read out aloud.

‘What the hell does derly mean?’ she asked.

‘No idea, maybe a word that is no longer used, Google it,’ replied Kris.

‘Could it be a wrong spelling of dearly?’ asked Jack as he walked into the room. Molly looked round and smiled acknowledging Jacks arrival.

‘Possible, if there were no English knights left it may have been written by someone whose first language was not English and the signature on the note left in place of the cylinder was Spanish,’ answered Molly.
